Michael Sorich
Biography

Michael J. Sorich joined Cavanagh Law Group as a partner after working 13 years at the Cook County State’s Attorney's Office, where he served as the youngest ever supervisor in the Civil Division. Since joining Cavanagh Law Group, Sorich has obtained more than $34,000,000 in verdicts and settlements in plaintiff’s personal injury trial work and wrongful death cases. Among them, a recent $20 million landmark settlement with the City of Chicago in the high profile “Code of Silence” wrongful death case in which a drunk, off-duty Chicago Police Officer drove and fatally struck another vehicle with two passengers inside. Sorich helped uncover dramatic evidence showing the City of Chicago failed to disclose crucial and damaging information during discovery. Sorich and Cavanagh Law Group attorney Timothy J. Cavanagh successfully compelled the City and police department to acknowledge its long-entrenched “Code of Silence,” resulting in a $20,000,000 settlement split between the two victims’ families.

In 2017, Sorich was named among the Chicago Law Bulletin’s top “40 Under 40” and named one of Leading Lawyers “Emerging Lawyers” of 2017. Sorich’s main areas of practice at Cavanagh Law Group are in personal injury, wrongful death, trucking and medical malpractice litigation. His extensive trial experience has been vital to the success of the cases he has taken on at Cavanagh Law Group. While working at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Sorich tried more than 50 criminal and civil cases in state and federal courts and argued before the Illinois State Appellate Court. Using the investigative, evidence-gathering and communicative skills he gained there, Sorich is able to build his cases to their highest potential and obtain the best results possible for his clients.

His victories include a $7,500,000 settlement on behalf of a woman who suffered traumatic injuries after being struck by a passing Metra commuter train. In 2017, Sorich obtained two settlements against trucking companies on behalf of his clients. One was for more than $5,900,000 for the family of a man who was struck and killed by a semi-truck that was leaving a construction site where employees later admitted they failed to follow safety protocols that would have prevented the client’s death. The other was $1,300,000 for the surviving family members of two elderly parents who were killed after being rear-ended and pushed underneath a semi-truck. The case settled for the full limits of all insurance coverage available.

Sorich also settled for the full insurance policy coverage in another $1,000,000 wrongful death case in which a landlord failed to provide an apartment unit with smoke detectors, resulting in the death of a child after a fire started, as well as recovering full insurance coverage amounts in a $2,500,000 underinsured motor accident case that caused the plaintiff catastrophic injuries, and a $1,000,000 underinsured motor accident that resulted in horrific bodily injuries to a woman who was hit in the head on by a truck driver who crossed the centerline.

Other settlements include $850,000 for a woman who received injuries that required painful surgery as a result of an improper boarding procedure at Chicago Midway Airport, $600,000 for a woman who received significant injuries following a dog attack, $325,000 for a client who was injured after being struck by a motor scooter and $300,000 for the family in a wrongful death medical malpractice case.

Because of his expertise, Sorich is also a sought-after speaker, college-level legal teacher and guest lecturer. He serves as a member of the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee and the Young Lawyers Tort Litigation Committee. He also serves on the Illinois Trial Lawyer Association's Board of Advocates.

Mr. Sorich is a member of the Illinois State Bar (2003), Florida State Bar (2004), United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, General Bar (2003), United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Trial Bar, (2010), United States Supreme Court (2013) and the Southern District of Illinois (2017).

Sorich grew up on the south side of Chicago and attended Marist High School. He has a BA in accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University and graduated cum laude from John Marshall Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. Michael and his wife Katie live in Western Springs with their three children. He is a volunteer soccer coach with the American Youth Soccer Organization and member of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago.
